STR Series

The STR series were designed to make compact workstations without compromise to the functionality of the STX series. The STR44 and the STR 240 deliver the sample through the top surface so it can fit under any liquid handler deck or workstation. This will leave ample room on the upper surface for additional equipment and increase the capacity of your automated line. In addition the STR concept will save you thousands of dollars by eliminating the need for special transfer station and extended or extra robotic arms.

The Star incubators use a new design that copes with extremely frequent accesses while maintaining ultra stable conditions inside the climate-controlled chamber. Plates are accessed through a small automatically controlled door (Gate) that opens during access only; therefore minimizing gas exchange during an access. As the common interface of the incubator and the robotic environment, there may be several transfer stations located around the Gate. This arrangement reduces bottle necks in throughput by optimizing required robot travel. For full manual access there is a large user door and removable cassettes (Stackers). The STR-Series robotic handling is completely located inside the incubation chamber. The handling allows full random access on all plates. The reliable shovel based handling system is used to transport plates by loading them on an extendable surface (shovel) during transport. The handling consists of a turntable that holds the removable stackers and a transport lift mechanism that transports a single plate between any stacker location and the external transfer station. The lift mechanism is located in the center of the turntable and can rotate around its own axis. On the STR44 and the STR240 there is a second vertical axis that extends the lift above the ceiling of the incubation chamber in addition to the vertical lift movement.
Using this mechanism, a plate may be transported to or from the incubation chamber onto the table surface above the instrument. Rotating the lift mechanism in its extended position enables you to address multiple transfer stations located on the table surface in a circular arrangement. The possibility of rotating the lift mechanism while extended gave the STR44 and STR240 their nickname "Periscope".

Like the STX-Series instruments the STR handling will accept most plate types without modification, teaching, or adaptation. Even simultaneous use of various plate types is possible. With the periscope delivery system you are not required to have extended grippers or extra robotic arms. The plates are delivered to transfer-stations on the upper portion of the liquid handler deck or workstation. You can have multiple transfer-stations to increase the workflow (reducing bottlenecks) for greater throughput. With the instrument placed under the workbench maximum system integrity and optimum usage of footprint is obtained. The STR instruments are ideal for protein crystallization work because of their inner rotation function and the stationary cassettes. Vibration and movements of the samples are minimized. The accelerated mass is extremely small. On units with integrated carrousel the carrousel can is only rotated for manual access of the rear cassettes. The STR incubators have their handling and climate controls on the back side of the instrument. All vibration sources such as compressor can be separated from the incubation chamber. The STR series includes three different size models that cover a capacity range of 44 up to 672 MTP plates. Temperatures range from -20°C to +70°C. All, high, low and adjustable humidity versions are available. All units allow full remote operation of climate and handling control.
